PRESTWICH playwright Anne Wynne is bringing her new play to Bury.

A Touch of Magic is her second play and is at Bury Met on July 11.

Anne, who works as a primary school teacher, said: “It’s a romantic comedy which explores the shifting relationship between spouses when they are forced to spend time alone together after a lifetime of being parents.”

Ron and Carol are off to sunnier climes to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Their first trip alone together for years. But on the first day of their hols Owen a slightly over enthusiastic kids resort entertainer/magician latches on to them and won’t let go. It is his presence that shifts the balance in their relationship and we see revelations and secrets beginning to unfold.

Although the play is dealing with some dark and serious issues about marriage and family it is done in a comic way and Ron and Carol go on a bit of a roller coaster journey.

Anne said: “With today’s young adults being priced out of the housing market many young people are finding themselves still living at home well into their 20’s and 30’s. But what’s it like for the parents having adult children unable to fly the nest and what’s the emotional fallout for mum and dad when those children eventually find their feet?”

Last year she wrote A Fine Life, which was shortlisted for the Best Comedy award at the Greater Manchester Fringe Awards 2018. It was also nominated in the Fringe Production of the Year category at the Northern Soul Awards awards in 2018 - and Anne was nominated as Northern Writer of the Year.

Having written short plays, sketches and stories on and off for the past 28 years, Anne said she turned to producing plays “simply because it’s become possible.”

A Touch of Magic stars Guy Hepworth, Kiran Den, Kiki Kendrick and Tom Banks and is directed by Leni Murphy, and was developed in conjunction with WriteForTheStage (WFTS).

Anne said: “With the huge support of WFTS, the internet and the joy of seeing my characters becoming fleshed out on the stage. I couldn’t resist wanting to do it all over again!”

A Touch of Magic is at the Kings Arms Salford on 2-4 July at 7pm, and The Met on 11 July at 7pm.
