PRESTWICH’S Angela Channell is following in the footsteps of the likes of Olivia Colman, Emma Thompson and Mel Giedroyc.

That’s because Angela, is a member of the famous Cambridge Footlights and you can see her in action at Manchester’s Comedy Store on July 1.

The team of five Footlights will perform their new show, Look Alive, for one night only as part of their world tour, which takes in such places as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and New York.

Angela, a former pupil of St Monica’s RC High School and former student of Holy Cross College, said: “Being from Manchester, comedy just feels like coming home. I grew up watching sitcoms like the Royle Family and seeing comedians like Victoria Wood and Peter Kay on the telly, so to feel like I’m following in their footsteps, just a little, is an amazing privilege.”

The sketch show takes audiences an a whirlwind tour of Earth seen from the outside.

Whether its Sherlock Holmes meeting his greatest match, a concerning X Factor audition or a babysitter out of their depths, scenes from human life are presented and subverted in an hour of eclectic sketch comedy.

Angela, who has just finished her second year of studying English at St John’s College, revealed the late Caroline Aherne was a huge inspiration for her.

“She was so authentic, and subtle and sharp,” she said.

Angela decided to try her luck at auditioning for the Footlights in her first year at university.

“I saw a sketch show they did during freshers’ week and it looked really fun.”

Since then, she has appeared in a number of Footlight’s shows, including the Christmas pantomime where she played a janitor who turned into God.
