PLANS to create a car collection point pod at a supermarket car park have been thrown out by the council.

Vehicle purchasing and wholesaling company webuyanycar.com wanted to install a sales pod at the Morrisons car park in Whitefield.

Planning officers described the proposed servicing arrangements as "sub-standard", saying it would be "detrimental" to highway safety.

The report said: "The proposal would result in the loss of an indeterminate number of existing parking spaces used by customers of the existing superstore, which is likely to lead to vehicles parking and carrying out manoeuvres on the highway to the detriment of the free flow of traffic and road safety."

The prefabricated single-storey unit would have occupied two parking spaces. No cars would have been sold from the site.

The application was refused but a separate application to install signs was granted permission.

The applicant has the right to appeal the planning refusal of the pod.
