Two women and a man had to be taken to hospital after a three-car smash.

Just before 8pm on Tuesday, emergency services were called to the junction of Beardwood and Preston New Road, following reports of a triple collision.

A spokesperson for the police said that a Vauxhall Vivaro had been travelling towards Blackburn along Preston New Road when it crashed with a Seat Ibiza, which was turning right onto Beardwood.

The Vauxhall then hit a Lexus RX400.

The spokesperson said: "A passenger of the Seat, a 20-year-old man from Blackburn, was trapped and had to be cut out of the vehicle by fire crews.

"He suffered pelvic injuries and head injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital.

"The driver of the Lexus, a 48-year-old woman, and a passenger in the Lexus, another 48-year-old woman, both from Blackburn, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for check-ups."

A fire service spokesperson said: "Two fire engines from Preston and Hyndburn attended a road traffic collision involving three cars on Preston New Road in Blackburn.

"Firefighters used cutting equipment to extricate one casualty from a vehicle who was treated by paramedics."

A rapid response vehicle and two ambulances also attended.

Preston New Road was closed for around four and a half hours while an accident investigation took place.

Mohammed Darez, who lives nearby, said: "Something needs to be done to calm the traffic on Preston New Road. 

"There's so many accidents along here and there are a lot of children who use the road to get to school and the Mosque.

"If the council don't do something soon someone is going to end up seriously hurt, or worse."

Sgt Lee Harris, of Lancashire Constabulary’s Tac Ops, said: "This was a significant collision and I would appeal for any witnesses who have not already spoken to the police or anyone who may have dash-cam footage which could assist to get in touch."
