We all know Glasgow loves a bank holiday out and about... so whether you prefer spending the upcoming one indoors or out, The Big Feed has got you covered.

This weekend, the cream of the city’s street food traders will be dotted across various venues to keep people not just happily nourished, but fully entertained too.

A Govan warehouse as the venue for The Big Feed’s flagship Street Social event may sound like a hard sell.

But not for organiser Jonathan Stipanovsky, as he gears up for this Saturday and Sunday’s mini food festival.

Jonathan says: “We’ve set up Street Social so that it’s really family-centric. We’ve got some of the best up and coming chefs delivering incredible food, a fantastic range of live acoustic acts and some of the best DJs in the city.”

“With face painting, games and balloon twisters for the younger kids, it’s a great entertainment package... and great fun.”

Aside from his career as a commercial diver, Jonathan followed his passion for street food by creating The Big Feed just over two years ago. Not reknown for its street food culture up to that point, he knew there was a gap in Glasgow’s market.

In joining with Ross Galbraith at Glasgow the Caring City as a business-charity partnership, The Big Feed has followed a strong community ethos.

And with a few traders having started with one trestle table as their only equipment at The Big Feed’s earliest street markets, they’ve had the opportunity to build up their brand.

Jonathan says: “One of our original traders, Julie Lin McLeod runs Julie’s Kopitiam in Shawlands, and is now opening up her second restaurant. So it’s a great launching pad for new talent.”

Sharing how the partnership between The Big Feed and Glasgow the Caring City has impacted people, Ross says: “It’s revolutionised the way Glasgow looks at street food and also the way the city’s businesses and charities work together.”

“With the money generated by The Big Feed that comes to Glasgow the Caring City, we use that to provide clothing packs in the community where that need exists.”

Along with the shared funding, Ross and Jonathan connect young people with hands-on training opportunity in building of the Street Social’s furniture and trader stalls.

In one shining example of just that, Ross says: “We had a young man come along who was third generation unemployed in his family and he directly moved onto employment with a local Govan business... that was all off the back of the work he’d done to get a Big Feed event up and running.”

Alongside the two-day Street Social, The Big Feed food traders can be currently found at the T. rex in Town Exhibition at the Kelvin Hall and at Electric Frog Festival at the Riverside Museum this Friday to Sunday.
