POLICE believe the death of a woman on the M66 earlier this week was a tragic incident'

They say there are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fatality on the motorway in the early hours of Thursday, May 2.

Detectives are continuing to investigate following the collision near to Bury.

Detective Chief Inspector Jon Kelly said: “This was a tragic incident and we are doing all we can to support the woman's loved ones at this awful time."

He said police were still appealing for dash-cam footage from other motorists who would have been in the area when the collision happened.

It involved a grey Mercedes travelling along the northbound carriageway.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was in lane one when she was hit by the car. She suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the collision.

Det Chief Insp Jon Kelly added: “I would like to reiterate the comments from our colleagues in the Serious Collision Investigation Unit and thank people for their patience whilst investigation work was carried out yesterday as I appreciate the closures caused massive disruption to the surrounding roads.

“Whilst there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, enquiries surrounding the collision remain ongoing and we’d encourage anyone with any information or dash-cam footage to get in touch.”

Shortly after 2am on Thursday 2 May 2019, police were called to junction 2 of the M66 Northbound following a collision.

A post mortem will be carried out but there are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death and a file has been passed to the coroner.
