ROVERS hero Craig Conway swapped his football boots for hair clippers to give six fans a haircut on Saturday.

The midfielder, who is also a trained barber, put his cutting skills up for auction so the lucky supporters could have their hair cut at Form Barbershop in Clitheroe.

All proceeds from the auction, including a percentage of Saturday’s takings from the barbershop, went to the East Lancashire Hospice, who Conway is Player Ambassador for.

He said: “After visiting the hospice earlier this year and seeing the fantastic work the staff do, I wanted to try and help out.

“And it was an automatic choice to do something with hair as it’s what I’m qualified to do, and it’s something a bit different.

“I set up a Go Fund me page as well as I want to raise a little more for the cause. I’ve set a target of £1,000 by Saturday April 27 at 10am so altogether, with today’s donations, I’m hoping to raise about £2,000.”

Getting their hair chopped on the day were David Colerio, who travelled from Altrincham, Gary Stephenson, Connor Elms, David Finch, and Ellis Heaton, 19, who travelled all the way from Reading with his dad Steven.

Mr Heaton said: “We used to live in Nelson and have supported Rovers all our lives. I saw something on Twitter about it and thought it would be a good thing to do for the hospice.”

Originally there were five winning auction bids, ranging from £30 to £100. But, after hearing about a little boy whose mum is receiving treatment for breast cancer at the hospice, Conway decided to give a special extra haircut to six-year-old Alexander Rigby.

Alexander’s grandmother, Sharon Rigby said: “Alexander’s mum, Sarah, is only 31 and has been through a lot of treatment this year. It’s been a tough year for us all but the hospice has been brilliant and Alexander is really excited about getting his haircut by Craig.”

The Hospice needs around £2.5m of voluntary donations a year to run and Conway and his supporters are hoping to raise as much money as possible from the event to help them to continue with the good work they do.

Rovers memorabilia, including Bradley Dack and Charlie Mulgrew signed boots were raffled, and more fundraising took place throughout the day.
