MORE than 33,000 people across Conwy, Denbighshire, Anglesey and Gwynedd have called upon Parliament to stop Brexit from going ahead.

As The Journal went to press, 5,711, 467 people from across the UK have signed Revoke Article 50 and Remain in the EU - making it the most popular petition to have been submitted to the parliament website - following continued uncertainty over the future of the Brexit process.

Signatories for the petition, which was started in late February, surged following a turbulent week in Westminster and a massed protest in London which organiser claim drew more than one million people. A similar protest in Bangor last Saturday drew 400 people calling for a second referendum.

Of the seven parliamentary constituencies across the four counties, Arfon, which includes Bangor, had the most signatories with 6,707, or 10.76 percent of constituents, while the Vale of Clwyd which includes Rhyl and Prestatyn has the least with 3,727 amounting to 5.17 percent.

Of the other constituencies, Clwyd West has 5,143 signatories, Dwyfor Meirionydd 4,549, Ynys Mon has 4,526, Aberconwy has 4,422 and Clwyd South has 3,905.

A competing petition has also been launched, calling on Parliament to Leave the EU Without a Deal in March 2019, receiving 566,498 signatures with 4,178 across the same North Wales constituencies and Clwyd West leading the pack with 750 signatories.

Both petitions can be viewed at petition.parliament.uk.
