A TEENAGER is celebrating after winning a top accolade at a care awards ceremony.

Katie Davock, from Leigh, was presented with the Newcomer to Care award at The Greater British Care Awards.

The award criteria included demonstrating an understanding of the word "care" and excellent people skills.

The 18-year-old care assistant has worked at Anchor's Montrose Hall at Sherwood Crescent in Wigan for the last two-and-a-half years.

Her success was recognised in the awards' regional finals which she won in Manchester in November.

This gave her a place at the national final in Birmingham on Friday, March 8 where she was victorious again.

Katie said: “I was so nervous and was really shocked when they called out my name.

"I love working at Montrose Hall as it gives me a chance to provide good quality care for some of the most vulnerable people in society.

“I also love working with older people because I find this to be a very rewarding job and I thoroughly enjoy spending time with the residents who live in Montrose Hall.

"I enjoy listening to their stories about their past and I really feel that we in Montrose Hall make a difference to the lives of people who live with us.

“Older people have given so much to society during their long lives so I want to give my all at work to ensure they enjoy living with us in a safe and comfortable home.”

Katie's colleagues and Montrose Hall residents were also overjoyed with her achievement.

But they were not surprised that Katie won the award.

She is well known at the care home for her commitment in providing high quality care.

Care home manager Kim Jones said that everyone at Montrose Hall was happy that Katie won first prize in the competition.

Kim said: “This award means that Katie has been recognised nationally for the great work she does.

“Katie is a valued member of staff who is committed to making our residents happy by providing person-centred care.

“I am so pleased as this puts Montrose Hall on the map and highlights the dedicated members of staff who work here.”
