PART of Fairfield Hospital was cordoned off while emergency services responded to a man on the roof of the building.
Police said they were called to reports of a concern for the welfare of a man.
Officers were called to the hospital, in Rochdale Old Road, at 6.20am this morning.
Three fire engines and a tactical response unit were also called to the scene.
It is understood that the emergency services were responding to a man on the roof of the hospital building.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We are currently dealing with a concern for welfare of a man at Fairfield Hospital.
"Officers are currently at the scene."
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said: "At 6.40am, three fire engines from Bury, Heywood, Farnworth, and a tactical response unit from Ashton were called to Fairfield General Hospital in Bury and are supporting Greater Manchester Police with an ongoing incident."
Rosso, who operate bus services in Bury, Rossendale and Rochdale, said that their 475 service is unable to serve the hospital grounds due to the ongoing police incident.
Due to an ongoing Police incident at Fairfield Hospital our 475 is now unable to serve the Hospital grounds. As a result we are still seeing delays on our Trax services. Our drivers are trying to keep to time however please expect delays. We apologise for this.
