A GRENADE was found in a canal this morning, Wednesday.

An eyewitness said the explosive was found by a man who was magnet fishing on Welch Hill Street in Leigh alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

A cordon was in place and a bomb disposal team arrived at the scene.

After carrying out checks, the bomb squad discovered that the grenade was not believed to be capable of working and a controlled explosion did not need to be carried out.

A police spokesman said "it is believed that the grenade may have been in the canal since the Second World War".

Army personnel and Wigan Council staff were also in attendance.
