Alex Kinsella was in a gold Peugeot 206 which crashed into a tree in Chorley New Road on Thursday.

On Friday Alex was awake and breathing on his own at Salford Royal Hospital, his mum Tracy Kinsella Wallace said.

She thanked friends and family who had been her “rocks” during the last few days saying: “I wouldn’t have gotten through these last few days without you.”

She said: “I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your messages, phone calls and prayers.”

Alex was in the front of a car which crashed at about 5am on Thursday morning.

He and another teenager were seriously injured when the car, which was heading towards Bolton, lost control, came off the road and crossed incoming traffic, before hitting a tree by the side of the road.

Greater Manchester Police have issued an appeal for information after the crash saying the 17-year-old driver and 18-year-old front passenger had been seriously injured. Two people in the back suffered minor injuries.

Chorley New Road was closed into late Thursday afternoon, from Beaumont Road to Regent Road in Lostock, as police carried out their investigations into the crash.

Alex used to play for Breightmet Wanderers AFC and the club shared a heartfelt get well message for their former player.

The Breightmet Wanderers said: “Breightmet Wanderers AFC will always love our former members - and especially this one!

“The club wants to take this opportunity to send our love and prayers out to our former player and the u11’s Player of the Year in 2012 Alex Kinsella — and we can’t wait to see you again soon mate!
