BOLTON Wanderers say the club "utterly condemns" supporters involved in fan violence during Saturday's defeat at Wigan.

After the game several videos surfaced on social media show a large number of fans surrounding police officers.

The Bolton News:

In one video, scuffles can be seen between supporters and police in high-visibility jackets, during which some fans appear to punch and grab officers who are stood on the stairs.

A Bolton Wanderers Football Club spokesperson said: “We utterly condemn the actions of those involved in the alleged disorder and are supporting Greater Manchester Police in their investigations.”

A supporter who was in the stands at the time, but asked to remain anonymous, said there had been bottles and coins thrown by both Bolton and Wigan fans throughout the game.

"There were a number of small children and young families there, right in the middle of the whole thing," he said.

"I’m not sure what started it, but I believe the police were trying to spot those who were throwing coins and bottles at the Wigan fans.

"Once this one man was being escorted out, it seemed like the officers were being heavy handed, and I don’t think that the Bolton fans liked it.

"After reading messages and replies of officers and former officers, I’ve learnt that the force they were using and that can be seen in the video is a tactic that they learn when trying to remove someone who is clinging on, rather than dragging them away, risking further injury.

"The Bolton fans then turned on the small number of officers and started to fight them, getting cheap shots in and running away from the incident to avoid further punishment.

"This then left the entire area vulnerable as a constant onslaught of bottles and coins were being thrown between the two sets of supporters - with no security present."

The Bolton News:

GMP said that four people were arrested at the match, with three people detained for public order offences and one for section 47 assault.
