A JUNCTION will be closed for a month to allow for the removal of a 110-year-old new gas main.

Work to replace the pipe will mean Carl Street, is closed at the junction with Halliwell Road, beginning on Saturday, March 23 and lasting until Tuesday, April 23.

The cast iron pipe, located under the surface of Halliwell Road, has transported gas for heat and power since 1907, but has started to show deterioration.

The work initially began on January 2 and has seen closures in 100 metre sections between the junction with Gladstone Street up to Eskrick Street.

Project planners say they have worked closely with Bolton Council’s Highways Department to minimise the impact on the area, although it will take at least 16 weeks to fully complete the pipe replacement.

Cadent Gas says advance notification will be given to affected properties, as gas supply will need to be stopped temporarily but should be back turned back on later on the same day.
