A GLOBAL Muslim relief charity is up for a national award for the second year in a row.

Muslim Global Relief, based in Nelson, will be among the finalists for Charity of the Year at the annual British Muslim Awards, which takes place this evening in Bradford. The group won Charity of the Year last year.

The awards ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on January 30 but was postponed due to the snow. The awards celebrate the positive impact of British Muslims in the UK and the charity was shortlisted from more than 500 humanitarian relief organisations from across the UK.

Mujahaid Bin Jamshaid, head of marketing and communications, described the nomination as a "fantastic achievement" and said: "To be shortlisted this year again is amazing."

The principal aims and objectives of the charity are the relief of poverty and sickness anywhere in the world.

An example of the work they have done is in Village Kousei Jingiri, which is based in Ghana. The group have made a contribution to social welfare in the villages by providing them water and sanitation, education to children and a community mosque.
