STUDENTS at Bolton College put on their own Greatest Show . . . of desserts!

Each year, catering students create a dessert to be chosen by the Mayor, then dished up for 200 guests at the Mayor’s annual charity ball.

Six delicious sweet treats were presented to the Mayor of Bolton Cllr Elaine Sherrington, each inspired by the theme of the ball, ‘The Greatest Showman’. This year, students served up lemon and raspberry tart, banoffee pie, peppermint meringue, chocolate brownies and rainbow cake.

Interim Principal, Bill Webster, helped with judging.

The Mayor chose the rainbow cake, made by Professional Cookery Level 2 students, Sophie Wolsey and Marek Vandas.

Fashioned in the shape of a top hat, the cake was inspired by Hugh Jackman’s character, PT Barnum, from the hit movie, The Greatest Showman.

Sophie said: “The other desserts looked amazing, so we were surprised but so pleased to win. I can’t believe our dessert is going to be served at such an important event.”

Marek added: “I’d like to thank the Mayor for picking our dessert.”

Cllr Sherrington said: “It was a very difficult decision to make due to the quality of the desserts. I decided on the top hat, named ‘The Greatest Show Cake’, as it was the dessert that best fitted the theme of the night. I’m sure our guests will enjoy it very much.”

Mr Webster added: “As always, we are delighted to contribute to this year’s annual charity ball. A lot of hard work went in to creating these desserts."

“The students came in to College early to prepare for the competition, demonstrating a level of commitment and flair that will serve them well when they progress to employment within the catering and hospitality industry.”
