VOLUNTEERS in Daubhill managed to fill more than 60 bags of litter over the weekend.

Councillors for the Hulton Ward - Cllr Toby Hewitt and Cllr Diane Parkinson, as well as Conservative candidate Derek Bullock headed up a group of litter-pickers.

They went out at 10am on Sunday and spent two hours collecting litter on Longfield Road, close to the St Helen's Road, Deane Church Lane and Morris Green Lane junction.

Cllr Parkinson said: "Every third Sunday we pick somewhere in our ward to fill as many bags of rubbish as we possibly can.

"It also gives us more of a chance to speak to residents about any personal issues they've faced with bin collections.

"My main goal is to have somewhere safe and clean for young children to play because at the minute there's rubbish everywhere and it attracts rats.

"I have no doubts that if we can make the place look nice, people will look after it. At the minute, it's a small minority ruining it for the rest.

"We are really grateful to everybody who joined in, there was a really good community feel to it and we hope we can get even more people involved in future."

Cllr Hewitt also thanked everyone in attendance and said some information found can be passed to enforcement teams who may take action.

He added: "Thank you for the tremendous effort from everyone on the litter-pick.

"If enforcement teams find information within household rubbish directly linking it to properties and landowners, they can use that to educate and enforce on people."
