A CAR smashed into a wall taking out a gas pipe.
Emergency services were called to Walmersley Old Road at 10.30pm.
The two people in the car were able to get out of the badly damaged vehicle as firefighters and police arrived.
The road was cordoned off to traffic and pedestrians and the gas board was alerted to carry out urgent repairs.
Watch manager at Bury Fire Station Steve Wilcock said: "It was a single vehicle road traffic collision.
"The people in the car had self-rescued. We closed the road and stopped pedestrians from walking up.
"The wind helped to dissipate the gas."
Firefighters remained on the scene until 1am as the gas board dug up the road to cap the leak.
