THERE'S nothing like a layer of gravy to make your roast dinner extra special.
Thick and full of flavour, the humble sauce does the job with no need for improvements.
Or does it?
One Bolton pub has decided to give their carvery accompaniment a festive makeover.
So naturally, I had to give it a try.
The Pine Tree Farm has launched 'glitter gravy' - a Christmas addition to their menu which involves, you guessed it, a load of glitter.
Walking into their pub on Cutacre Way I felt a little apprehensive.
Would it look like there had been some sort of unicorn massacre on my plate?
Thankfully, the result wasn't that extreme.
The gravy had a sparkle to it - without looking unappetising - and I truly did feel in the festive spirit as I devoured the plate of food in front of me.
Glitter gravy is great and so was the pub.
However, the best was yet to come. For dessert came and I found on my plate a mince pie and Yorkshire pudding, topped with icing.
They were warm, sweet and tasty, with soft pastry and a delicious filling.
Kitchen manager Wayne Garstang tells me that for Easter they had Yorkshire puddings filled with chocolate eggs. Only he knows what might come next.
If the idea of glitter in your gravy puts you off I wouldn't blame you. But your mouth will thank you for taking the risk.
Give it a go - it is Christmas, after all.
