A CARE home where the pureed food horrified residents has been told to make improvements by the health watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an unannounced inspection at Shannon Court Care Centre in Bolton due to concerns being raised about the home.

Inspectors found five breaches of regulations relating to safe care and treatment, nutrition, dignity, person-centred care and good governance.

The CQC has asked the home in Radcliffe Road to address these five areas of concern and report on what action will be taken.

The report said: “One person said, 'I like my food when it’s not mushy'. We observed them being served their [pureed] lunch, their facial expression portrayed horror when it was placed in front of them. Their comment was 'It’s awful'."

Residents also told inspectors the pureed food was “not appetising at all”.

Concerns were also raised about the lack of fruit and vegetables on offer and the way medicines were stored.

Inspectors found a resident’s bed was in the communal lounge because they were a fall risk. Inspectors felt this was more for the home’s benefit than the resident’s. The report called this “unacceptable” and raised it with staff at the time of inspection. The manager promised to review the issue. Elsewhere inspectors found “dirty dentures left in a sink”.

The inspectors did note areas of good care, including staff who seemed well informed about residents’ history and needs.

The care home staff did not respond to a request for comment.
