A SERVICE will be held to remember those who lost their lives in a mining accident in 1910.

The Pretoria Pit disaster left 344 men and boys dead, after an underground explosion in Over Hulton.

December 21 will mark the 108th anniversary since the tragedy.

A short service will take place in Westhoughton from 7:40am at the Pretoria Pit disaster centenary memorial in Ditchfield Garden, Market Street.

Maroons will be fired at 7:50am.

This will be followed by a remembrance service at 10am at St Bartholomew Church, where wreaths will be laid at the monument.
