A MAN arrested on suspicion of firearms offences after 'items' were found at a house has been released.

Five streets in Burnley were evacuated after police officers and the bomb squad visited Dall Street at around 9am under warrant yesterday.

A 100metre cordon was put in place as Hollingreave Road, Dall Street, Reed Street, Parkinson Street and Brunswick Street were shut off and people were evacuated from their homes.

Several items were found by officers inside the house, however police said none of those had been 'were deemed to be of any risk' and residents were allowed to go home.

Supt Richard Robertshaw said: “We appreciate the concern this incident may have caused and I am grateful to those affected for their co-operation and support while we undertook the work we needed to carry out to ensure that there was no risk.

"I’m sure people will understand that public safety must be our prime consideration and I am pleased that this incident has now been resolved.

"As well as the community I would like to thank our partners for their support – it is appreciated."

Burnley Wood Community Centre in Springfield Road was opened up for residents to go to if they needed support while they were out of their homes.

Around 150 people came in for food, drink and warmth.

Support police squads from as far as Blackpool were called to the scene.

A police spokesman said: "A man arrested on suspicion of firearms offences yesterday has been released under investigation.

"We would like to thank the public affected once again for their co-operation and understanding."
