HUNDREDS of families flocked to this year's dazzling firework display in Leverhulme Park, described by visitors as "bigger and better" than ever before.

Once again the event proved a huge success, as families, friends and residents turned out en masse to celebrate Bonfire Night.

The popular funfair returned for the occasion, with children and young people gathering to sample the various amusements.

It was a double celebration for Stacey Pendlebury and her daughter Autumn Rose, whose fifth birthday coincided with the event.

Stacey, who turns 31 today, said: "The fireworks are always really good and there is always lots on for the children. They have really enjoyed the rides. We thought it would be something a bit different for her to celebrate her birthday. She has had a fantastic time."

Ben Warren, from Radcliffe, who attended with his partner Sam Dignan and three-year-old son Jacob, gave high praise to the display.

He said: "We have been coming here every year for six or seven years.

"It is one of the best firework displays around. We have invited all of our friends — there are about 10 of us here.

"We love the atmosphere and it is local for us."

Visitors had the chance to enjoy some traditional favourites, including candyfloss, toffee apples, hot dogs, and Holland's black peas in a cup — with salt, of course.

Jade Parish, aged 25 from Halliwell, said: "We come every year. It is brilliant for the kids. They love it. And it is a great firework display.

"I think it is better than the other local events. We are also enjoying the black peas."

Bolton-based family firm As Good As It Gets were also on hand with their food van, providing burgers, hot dogs, candyfloss and hot drinks to visitors.

Co-owner Nicholas Hill said: "We have been very busy. We are ready for a cup of tea."

The annual display has been going for more than 20 years.

Stevie Ellis, who attended with her family from Bromley Cross, said: "It is our first time at the event. It is really good. The kids loved it."

Her partner Alex Powell recounted how he had been to the Leverhulme Park fair when he was growing up.

Presenters from Tower FM entertained the crowds until 8pm. X Factor star Kayleigh Taylor was one of several acts who took to the stage during the build-up.

The 29-year-old from Wigan performed a variety of songs by American rock band Evanescence, Kelly Clarkson and Rihanna, to name a few.

Miss Taylor, who attended with her partner and their two daughters, said: "It was our first time at the fair. It was amazing. There was a great atmosphere."

The Leverhulme Park display is organised by Bolton Council, at no cost to members of the public.

Deputy Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Roger Hayes, urged the packed crowd to join in with the countdown before the show began.

The spectacular display filled the sky for some 20 minutes, with a dramatic musical accompaniment adding to the experience.

Cllr Hayes said: "What a fantastic fireworks display that Bolton puts on.

"It was a perfect dry night for watching the fireworks.

"Thank you to everyone for coming in such great numbers and for making it, once again, a brilliant family event."
