A great-great grandma from East Lancs has celebrated a milestone birthday.

Annie Wood from Turton turned 101 on Saturday October 27, and marked the incredible achievement surrounded by friends and family.

The pensioner, who has lived in Turton all her life, and has four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren, worked in the Darwen cotton mills before moving on to work as a dinnerlady at St Anne's School, before retiring in 1978.

Mrs Wood attends the Derwent Hall Day Care centre in Darwen three days a week, and over the weekend, staff at the centre presented her with a huge cake.

Senior Carer at Derwent Hall, Wendy Pickup said: "Annie lives at home with her daughter but comes to us three times a week.

"She's got a huge appetite and she's a bit of a chatterbox too."

Daughter, Kath Wilson, 75, said that in her heyday, Annie loved to dance and was very prominent in the local community.

Mrs Wilson said: "She's had a very busy, very lively life."
