The fire service are warning people not to burn their rubbish on the street.

The advice comes after crews were called to an incident on Sunday 21 October, in Cherry Street, Blackburn, where residents had set a 45 gallon drum alight and left it burning on the pavement.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "In Blackburn it is not acceptable to burn your household rubbish in a 45 gallon drum on the pavement.

"Take it to the tip."

The fire service are aware that many people carry out controlled burning at their properties but would advise those people to refrain from doing so on the street.

The spokesperson said: "If you are going to carry out controlled burning it needs to be on your own property.

"People must consider the safety of themselves and their neighbours and not risk any damage to property or people."

The warning comes at the same time as the fire service issue their annual safety message for Halloween and Bonfire Night.

A statement issued by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "These two dates are renowned for big events, large groups of people being outside and lots of fun.

"To ensure these events continue to be a highlight during the darkest and coldest months of the year we want to share some safety advice."

Halloween

  • Plastic capes and bin liners are often used as costumes – keep them away from candles or other naked flames
  • Use battery operated lights within homemade lanterns and pumpkins. Battery operated lights are much safer than candles
  • Take extra care with candles – they are extremely hazardous. If the candle tips over it could set light to materials such as costumes, curtains, clothes and furniture and start a serious fire. Make sure they are extinguished properly before leaving the house or going to bed and are out of reach from children.
  • If clothing does catch on fire then stop, drop and roll.

Bonfire Night

  • Do not burn household rubbish or white goods on a bonfire. Keep your bonfire within a cordon area away from fireworks, people, property and trees and never light using flammable liquid. Check for animals hiding before lighting
  • Keep pets indoors and ensure children are safe and a good distance away from the fireworks
  • Pour water on bonfire embers to ensure it is fully extinguished before leaving or going to bed

While the advice is not limited to the points above, the fire service would also advise that people attend organised firework and bonfire displays in order to remain safe.
