A MAN suspected of drink driving had to be cut out of his car after smashing into some railings.

The incident, involving a silver Vauxhall Astra, happened in Tottington Road, close to the junction with Walshaw Road, shortly after midnight.

After crashing into the railings, the driver was unable to get out of the vehicle.

Crews from Bury and Whitefield, as well as two technical rescue units, rushed to the scene and used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the man, who was in his mid 20s.

After being taken to hospital as a precaution, the driver was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

The road was closed following the incident, but has since reopened.
