A secondary school has won a coveted accolade at a community awards ceremony.

Accrington Academy was named Secondary School of the Year at the 2018 Hyndburn Community Sports Awards, which were held at Accrington Town Hall on Friday October 12.

And presenting the school with their award was none other than Winter Olympics star Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards.

Accrington Academy’s Head of School Nicola Palmer said: "Accrington Academy is committed to providing an education with character, an important part of which is our ongoing engagement with local sporting organisations, including active participation in sporting events and initiatives such as the School Sports Ambassador scheme."

The Secondary School of the Year award was given in recognition of the academy’s participation in the Youth Sport Trust’s School Sports Ambassador scheme which sees the school actively working alongside other Ambassador schools to promote physical activity and sport for young people across the country.

Accepting the academy’s award were Head of PE Mrs Susan Tahraoui and PE teacher Sarah Lawson.

School Games Organiser for Hyndburn and Ribble Valley School Sports Partnership, Jane Johnson was also in attendance.

The Hyndburn Community Sports Awards is a celebration of local sporting achievements from athletes, coaches, volunteers, teams, clubs and schools across Hyndburn.

The winners of the awards will go on to represent Hyndburn at the Lancashire Sports Awards on Friday November 23 at the Hilton Hotel, Blackpool.
