A SLEEPOUT at Turf Moor has been hailed as 'special' after raising more than £20,000 for three charities.

More than 50 people battled through the stormy conditions to travel to Burnley FC's stadium for the first ever Turf Sleepout last night.

Football fans, business leaders, families and councillors from across the North West were tasked to give up the comfort of their own bed and slept out for several hours near the pitch.

Participants, including Burnley council leader Mark Townsend, helped to raise nearly £23,000 for three charities: Burnley FC in the Community, homelessness charity Emmaus and SafeNet Domestic Abuse.

On the Burnley FC in the Community Facebook page, a spokesman said: "Just in. The running total for Turf Sleepout is now almost £23,000.

"A big thank you to over 50 people who travelled from as far as Hereford and the Lakes to sleep out and raise money for Burnley FC in the Community, SafeNet and Emmaus Burnley.

"You did something very, very special."

Other people who took part included the leaders of the three charities: Neil Hart, Burnley FC in the Community chief executive officer; Helen Gauder, managing director of SafeNet and Stephen Buchanan, director of Emmaus Burnley and Emmaus Preston.
