MONEY can't buy happiness so they say — but it certainly bought a few hours of delight for the audience of Half a Sixpence.

The musical comedy — a film version of which starred Tommy Steele — was brought to the Octagon Theatre stage by Bolton Operatic Society in November 1988.

The show is based on the novel Kipps by HG Wells, with lyrics by David Heneker and book by Beverley Cross.

The story centres on Arthur Kipps, an orphan who unexpectedly inherits a fortune, and climbs the social ladder before losing everything and realizing that you just can't buy happiness.

Bolton Operatic Society a week long run of the show.

Half a Sixpence was first produced in London's West End at the Cambridge Theatre on 21 March 1963, with Marti Webb, in her first leading role, playing Ann.

A 1967 film adaptation starring Steele, along with Julia Foster and Cyril Ritchard, was directed by George Sidney and choreographed by Gillian Lynne.
