A FIRM which built five unauthorised mansions on the outskirts of Horwich will tomorrow discover if its proposals to build dozens of new homes on an old greyhound stadium are to get the green light.

Sparkle Developments is currently appealing against an enforcement notice served by Bolton Council ordering it to knock down the luxury homes at Grundy Fold Farm.

But its proposals to build 50 new homes on the old stadium in Wigan Road, Westhoughton have been recommended for approval by planning officers.

The authority’s planning committee will decide whether to give the scheme the go-ahead when it meets on Thursday afternoon.

Westhoughton town councillor Ryan Battersby said that he welcomed the scheme.

He said: “It’s a brownfield site and I stand by the policy of developing brownfield sites first, so I’m in favour of it. I hope that the developer complies with any conditions and recommendations placed by the planning committee should it be approved.”

The Westhoughton-based firm was given permission to build 38 homes on the site back in 2014, the same year the stadium was demolished.

But it now wants to build different types of houses to “better reflect market trends”

The scheme includes 35 smaller detached properties and 15 semi-detached or terraced properties.

Cllr Battersby said the new scheme could be better for the community: “It’s a positive move to have a mix of different types of homes in place to give more options to local residents.”
