EIGHT of Bolton takeaways are failing to cut the mustard after being given the worst possible rating for their food hygiene by industry inspectors.

The majority of the borough's 455 takeaways, sandwich shops and mobile caterers received a rating of four or five, with 158 achieving the highest possible rating.

This means that these food outlets were found to have “good” or “very good” hygiene standards.

Almost a quarter achieved a rating of three, meaning that hygiene standards were “generally satisfactory” and a total of 41 businesses were told to make some improvements, receiving a rating of two.

But more than seven per cent were rated one which means “major improvement” is necessary and eight others were given the lowest rating of zero, requiring urgent improvement, including Gandom Bakery, which also sells fresh Persian breads.

Of the 455 takeaways, sandwich shops and mobile caterers, 22 are awaiting inspection and 16 have a new rating pending.

A council spokesman said: “These ratings show that the majority of takeaways, sandwich shops and mobile caterers have scored three or above, and more than half have achieved the higher four or five star rating.

“When businesses receive low scores and are struggling we work closely with them and advise them on how to achieve higher ratings in their next inspections.”

The data used came from the Food Standards Agency website on September 6.
