THREE people have sustained injuries after a two-vehicle crash on the M61.

The collision occurred between junction 3 for Bolton and junction 4 for Walkden, on the southbound carriageway.

Fire crews from Farnworth were called to the scene at about 6.20am on Monday, shortly followed by the ambulance service and North West Motorway Police.

Farnworth watch manager Paul Harrison said: "We were the first on the scene.

"We assessed the casualties. Three people suffered minor injuries. Thankfully they were not trapped inside the cars. The ambulance crews arrived and checked the three people over.

"We protected the scene from traffic and made the vehicles safe."

Delays were experienced by drivers due to the third lane of the carriageway being blocked.

North West Motorway Police said via Twitter: "There is slow traffic on the M61 due to an accident which has now been moved to the hard shoulder.

"There is congestion backing up to Junction 5 for Westhoughton.

"All lanes have been re-opened."
