A MAN who successfully underwent a double lung transplant died on his birthday after his body rejected the new organs.

Michael Guest, 65, of Roosevelt Road, Kearsley, was found on the bedroom floor of his home by his carer on March 22.

Coroner Simon Nelson concluded the inquest on July 26 by accepting the pathologist’s conclusion that the cause of death was pulmonary failure, due to a chronic rejection of the lung graft.

Mr Guest was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2006 and underwent a bi-lateral lung transplant at Wythenshawe Hospital last year in an effort to prolong his life.

But he contracted terminal pneumonia in January and became oxygen dependent. His health rapidly declined and he was told he could expect to live another six months.

His daughter Dominique Brown, 30, told the inquest how her father was happy with the surgery and felt he had “got his life back”.

She said: “My dad was so grateful for the organs he received to extend his life. He was very grateful and it greatly improved the quality of his life.”
