THOUSANDS of people will be able to go for gold as Bolton's town centre hosts a three-day sports event.

Victoria Square will be transformed into a hub of activity giving people of all ages and abilities the chance to try their hand at trampolining, taekwondo, roller skating, weightlifting and more.

Sport on the Square will return to Bolton between 10am and 4pm this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with each day having its own theme.

Every day there will be a guided walk around the town centre — 'the Daily Mile' — and cycle rides organised by British Cycling.

Cllr John Byrne, Bolton Council's executive member for culture, tourism and sport, said: "Sport on the Square is always a fantastic event which allows people to try as many sports as possible.

"Last year we had more than five thousand people on one day alone. There’s a range of sports for people of all levels of abilities.

"My colleagues and I will be taking part in the Daily Mile and showing how being fit and active can easily fit into your daily routine."

Tuesday will be a taster day for visitors, giving them the opportunity to try a range of sports, including kickboxing, dance, gymnastics and crown green bowls. A special 20m athletics sprint track will also be set up.

On Wednesday — Inclusion Day — there will be an emphasis on sports that people with disabilities and those without can all try.

Specially adapted bicycles from ‘Wheels for all’ will be available for people with disabilities along with power chair football, and walking football.

Shoppers on Thursday will be able to take part in a day dedicated to health and wellbeing, including a variety of sports and activities for older people.

The entire event will also be smoke free as part of a Greater Manchester ‘Smokefree Summer’ campaign and those attending are asked not to light up.

Sarah Price, executive lead for population health and commissioning at Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership, said: "We see Smokefree Summer events as an opportunity for people to enjoy temporary smokefree spaces, and better understand the value of more permanent smokefree zones.

“Smokefree environments, whether in or outdoors, make everyone feel better. Even outside there is risk from breathing in second-hand smoke, particularly for children. With smoking continuing to be an addiction that starts in childhood, we want to do everything we can to deliver a tobacco-free generation.”

To take part, collect a free wrist band from Decathlon Bolton and the Air Vault Trampoline Park, at Wingates Industrial Park, beforehand, or at the event on the day.
