PUPILS from a primary school in Westhoughton are celebrating the end of a year of success.

Year Six pupils at St George’s C E School achieved improved SATs results, while other students got involved in opening a new outdoor classroom and starting a new gardening club.

The average scores in SATs, for combined reading, writing and maths measures, was 16pc higher than it had been the year before, and was above the national average.

Head teacher Philip Ivory said: “We are so proud of all our Year Six children who have worked their socks off this year to achieve their very best.

“The staff have worked with energy, enthusiasm and dedication to not only ensure the children fulfill their potential but are ready for high school.

“It has been a tremendous effort from the community of St George’s and we look forward to many successful and exciting years to come.”

The school also received a grant from the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme, allowing improvements to outdoor facilities.

The money was used to complete work on an outdoor classroom, which is used to give normal lessons in a different environment.

The children have also started a gardening club, where they are growing tomatoes, lettuce, runner beans, lettuce, carrots, courgettes and potatoes.

This led the children to hold a sale for some of their produce, making £40 for Horwich Wildlife Hospital.

Year Six pupil Tom said the club was “really cool” and that it had inspired him to start growing his own produce at home.

St George’s has now broken up for the summer holidays.
