THE M65 near Blackburn has reopened after a crash.

The westbound carriageway from junction six at Whitebirk Roundabout to junction five at Guide was shut after a car overturned at about 12.45pm today. 

Motorists endured delayed of around one hour while traffic was diverted off the motorway at junction six through Blackburn to Shadsworth.

But the carriageway was fully reopened at around 2.20pm. 

Force incident manager Phil Broughton said two people were taken to hospital for a check-up.

He said: "A police vehicle was passing by and noticed car on its roof, so it pulled over.

"Two people have been taken to hospital for a check-up.

"We haven't established the cause yet but that will be investigated."

Fire crews also attended from Hyndburn and Blackburn and firefighters used cutting equipment to free one person from the car. 

A fire service spokesman said: "Three fire engines from Hyndburn and Blackburn attended a road traffic collision on the M65 westbound at junction six. 

"Firefighters used cutting equipment to rescue one casualty trapped in an overturned car, who was taken to hospital by ambulance."

Traffic analytics firm Inrix said earlier: "M65 Westbound closed, stop-start traffic due to overturned car between J6 A678 (Whitebirk Roundabout) and J5 A6177 Park Road (Guide / Shadsworth).

"All traffic is now being held to deal with the accident.

"Westbound traffic is being taken off at J6."
