A SCHOOL is putting the mental health of its pupils and staff at the top of its agenda as it opens a new hub to cater for their wellbeing.

James Frith, MP for Bury North, officially opened the Wellbeing Hub at Holly Mount RC Primary School.

The space consists of a pod where staff and pupils will be able to undertake a range of activities, including Lego-based therapy, pet therapy, meditation and massage, and talking groups.

Head teacher Eleanor England said: "The hub has provided staff and children a much needed place to press pause when life gets a bit too much.

"Mental health and wellbeing is high on the Government's agenda and a priority at Holly Mount."

The pod has been funded by jewellers Beaverbrooks and built by various teams who gave their time to the project for free.

The granite base of the pod was provided by Hardscape, the Electric Centre, Bury, provided the electrics, which were installed by HW Solutions, and the grass and carpet were fitted by WW Flooring.

The pod is visited by groups and individuals throughout the school day.

James Frith, who opened the hub on Friday, July 6, said it was vital to encourage young people to have conversations about their emotional and mental health.

Mr Frith said: "I was pleased to be invited to open this fabulous new space at Holly Mount.

"It is so important that we encourage wellbeing and the conversations about emotional and mental health, not just in our schools but everywhere.

"None of us know what each other carry around in our minds or on our shoulders, so discussing this with our children is vital.

"We’re good at spotting those in need if they have a plaster on their arm or an injury of some sort but healthy young minds are just as important to support and nurture.

"I hope other schools will follow their lead and raise the money to provide it for their children and staff because we all benefit."
