A MAN who should have been on a plane to Spain found himself in a police cell instead.

Blackburn magistrates heard Wayne Bannister was arrested after a row with his partner when he turned up late and drunk on the eve of their sunshine holiday.

And he was not released from the cells until the following day, after his plane and his partner had left for sunnier climes.

Bannister, 38, of Riding Street, Southport, pleaded guilty to criminal damage to two doors belonging to his partner and trying to enter her home.

He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with 150 hours unpaid work and 15 days rehabilitation activity requirement.

He was ordered to pay £85 costs and £85 victim surcharge.

The court heard Bannister had been to a Christening on a Sunday afternoon and had promised not to drink to much and be back by 3pm.

He came back drunk at 5pm and there was a row.

Bannister was told to go out and calm down but when he returned his partner refused to let him back in and he kicked the door to try and gain entry.

Mark Williams, defending, said Bannister was arrested as a result and taken to Burnley Police Station and then the custody suite at Greenbank Police Station in Blackburn where he spent the night.

"By the time he was charged the following day he had missed the plane to Spain and missed his holiday," said Mr Williams.
