A MODEL railway enthusiast has her fingers crossed after a TV show she appeared in was nominated for an award.

Jenny Kirk, from Tonge Moor, was one of the team leaders in The Biggest Little Railway In The World on Channel 4, which aired in January.

The programme documented a group of people in their bid to create a 70-plus mile model railway track across Scotland.

And it was announced last month that the show had been nominated for a TV Choice Award in the Best Factual Show category.

A public vote, was held to decide the shortlist for the awards, which will be announced on June 26.

Mrs Kirk said: "I think it has all been great. It is one of those things that has really shown people the hobby and that has been recognised by the TV Choice Awards.

"I feel really honoured that it has been nominated for that. I am still getting people coming up to me saying 'you were on that show'.

"I love that it is something that has captured people's imaginations."

The 38-year-old led D Team during the construction of the railway, which went along the length of the Caledonian Canal going from Fort William to Inverness.

Mrs Kirk, who lives with her wife Cllr Zoe Kirk-Robinson in Eldon Street, praised the quality of the finished programme.

She said: "It was really good, I saw the production side of it and I do not envy the people who have to edit all the footage.

"They have done a great job and I am really pleased with the end result. Everyone would fully deserve the award if it wins."

The model railway enthusiast first heard of the series in the summer of 2016.

And she responded when show-makers Love Productions called for participants and she spent two weeks being filmed in the summer of 2017.

She was made a team leader following an audition at the Love Production studios in London, which she described as more of a 'team-building' exercise.

Teammates included fellow enthusiasts as well as engineers from Network Rail.
