Tony Mowbray is targeting around half the number of additions as last summer to prepare his side for life in the Championship.

And the Rovers chief is understood to be relaxed over his recruitment plans as the club wait to make their first foray in to the transfer market.

The Rovers boss is keen to add quality to his ranks, but with over 20 players under contract for next season, doesn’t see the need to overhaul of his squad.

Work remains ongoing behind the scenes in a bid to add extra quality to the squad, particularly in the attacking department, despite the re-signing of experienced duo Danny Graham and Craig Conway.

That is one area he is looking to further strengthen, but is relaxed over Rovers’ recruitment plans given the relatively low number of players he’s looking to bring in.

“We brought in 12 last year, there’s no need to do that this year,” he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“What we do need to do is add bits of quality, bits of experience and bits of potential.

“We will add some players with experience of the Championship but others of around 23 or 24, like Bradley, who came in with the potential to become a big player with growth in them.

“That’s important for the club, if we’re going to spend money then there’s a value to add to them which will hopefully progress the team towards where we want to be but at the same time adding value to the asset.

“There might be a 30-year-old coming in with bags of experience who can help, there might be some 22 or 23-year-olds coming in who have got bags of talent but need to bring it out of them.

“We’re working on all of that and deciding where we’re going to spend it.

“Are we going to spend it on experience, or potential? All of that depends on the current strength of the squad we’ve got and the existing team.”

Rovers aren’t looking to lose any of their under contract players but pre-season may dictate the futures of some of the fringe players.

The players will return to pre-season training next Sunday before flying out to Austria for their week-long pre-season training camp.

A number of the club’s talented young players, such as Scott Wharton, Willem Tomlinson, Lewis Travis and Joe Nuttall, are expected to travel with the squad in a bid to force their way in to Mowbray’s plans for next season.

Rovers are expected to field loan enquiries for a number of their youngsters, but Mowbray may be keen to keep some of them on board to increase his options.

Their international quartet of Darragh Lenihan, Derrick Williams, Charlie Mulgrew and Corry Evans, may be given extra recovery time having only finished their international commitments earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Rovers are understood to be progressing with contract talks for their prize assets and are hopeful of securing their signatures as Mowbray looks to build a core group of players to progress the club.
