THE sun was shining down on Bolton town centre as the new Mayor of Bolton carried out her first civic duty.
Crowds gathered in Victoria Square to watch on as Councillor Elaine Sherrington led this year's Civic Sunday procession.
Cllr Sherrington was accompanied on the town hall steps by Sergeant Peter Crowe, of Bolton Central police station, as well as fellow councillors, civic dignitaries, and various military organisations.
Cllr Sherrington said: "I am delighted.
"The weather was beautiful for the people of the borough who turned out to wish me well for the start of my mayoral year.
"The service in the parish church, I found particularly moving."
Bolton's Hoover Band, one of the longest running brass bands in the world, performed for the occasion, joined by the 103 Regiment Royal Artillery's Ian Williams, Tony O'Boyle and Rowan Bos on pipes and drums.
Mr Williams said: "It was an honour to play for Bolton and to support the Mayor."
The parade, also comprising sea cadets and standard bearers, made its way through the town centre and into Bolton Parish Church where a special service was held.
A selection of hymns, prayers and readings preceded the address made by the Vicar of Bolton, Rev Chris Bracegirdle.
Participants then enjoyed refreshments in Festival Hall to round off the celebration.
