STAFF at a primary school have paid tribute to a reception teaching assistant who left after 33 years.

Linda Kirby worked at St James' CE Primary in Farnworth since 1985 but left yesterday after a special assembly and a presentation from children.

Vicky Nuttall, early years foundation stage leader at the school, has worked with Mrs Kirby for around 18 years. She said staff would miss her but that they all wished her good luck in her retirement.

She added: "It's almost like it's been everyone's last week because she has taught generations of people in the area.

"There are parents of children who come here now who remember being taught by her.

"It's a massive change for us all but we are trying not to be sad because she deserves a great retirement. We can't replace her, she's definitely irreplaceable."

In a final assembly, people from the school gave video tributes to the departing teaching assistant.

Joanne Shaw, who was taught by Mrs Kirby and now has her own child in reception, said: "I knew Mrs Kirby as Miss Durant, with her tight curls, perfect skin and contagious smile.

"She was a huge part of my primary school days. She was always positive and kind-hearted and so supportive.

"She went on to teach all three of my own children. A lovely, down to earth lady, who is so good at what she does."

Mrs Shaw's mother Carole Hindley, remembers her daughter being taught by Mrs Kirby.

She said: "Mrs Kirby has taught all of my children and even my grandchildren.

"She has always been dedicated to her job. She is a well respected lady and my children loved her to bits, as do I.

"I wish her the best in her well-deserved retirement."
