AFTER the highs of last week’s win at Ewood Park, I think the fear from many may have been that we’d suffer a bit of a hangover against Huddersfield on Saturday.

But, just a day after Sean Dyche’s third anniversary as Burnley boss, we ensured the gaffer could enjoy a celebratory drink after a fairly-routine 2-1 win over the Terriers.

It wasn’t all plain sailing and despite being well in control at half time thanks to a brace from Andre Gray, we couldn’t find the third to kill off the game and a late Michael Duff own goal ensured the final five or so minutes were a little more nervy than they perhaps should have been.

Let’s not dwell too much on that though because, despite it not being the complete performance I’m sure Dyche would have demanded, we saw plenty of positives.

One of the main positives was the continued growth in the Gray and Sam Vokes partnership.

The Clarets’ front two seem to have developed the same kind of understanding that Vokes had with Danny Ings during our last promotion season a couple of years ago.

The headlines for Saturday will all go to Gray for his two goals but Sam was still a key component in his success, especially with the second goal for which he slid into Andre with a delightful through ball.

Vokesy might not be on the scoresheet every week but his link-up play will be one of the most important ingredients if we are to sustain our top-two challenge.

As for Gray, well I’m massively impressed with the start he’s made to his Burnley career.

The lad has absolutely everything – power, pace, striking ability – and he ran Huddersfield ragged at times.

He’s also pretty handy from the penalty spot having stepped up and stroked home from 12 yards after being felled by Joel Lynch in the box.

I think there were a couple of question marks over whether it should have been a penalty but Terriers boss Chris Powell was honest enough to admit after the game that if a defender goes to ground in the box then there’s always the likelihood the referee might point to the spot.

His second was an absolute delight, bursting into the box onto Vokes’ through ball and smashing the ball past the Huddersfield keeper, who should have perhaps done better at his near post.

Another win secured and that means we’ve won eight of our opening 11 games with just the one defeat. All without fully hitting our stride.

Fulham at the Turf tomorrow night will be a big test but the way we’re getting results at the minute, I wouldn’t bet against the Clarets juggernaut rolling on.
