A WHALLEY-based mental health authority has welcomed a new board member.

John Cowdall has been appointed a non-executive director of Calderstones NHS Trust.

Mr Cowdall, from Chorley, runs his own management and development company and has served as chief executive of West Lancashire Council.

The trust, based at the hospital in Mitton Road, cares for people with learning disabilities from across the North West.

Mr Cowdall replaces Mary Thomas who has left the trust to become a non-executive director at East Lancashire NHS Primary Care Trust, which was founded in October.

He said: "I am looking forward to being part of an organisation that is looking to progress and develop and I am hopeful that I will be able to contribute to the success of the trust in years to come."

Mr Cowdall, who is married with one grown up daughter, will be paid £5,800 a year.
