PEOPLE whose homes are at risk of flooding have been urged to join an early-warning service.

The Environment Agency has sent letters to houses in Lomeshaye, Carr Hall and Newbridge areas of Nelson and Barrowford offering them the free flood warning service.

The service provides information over the phone if there is the possibility of a flood.

The agency offers the service to areas it believes to be at a high risk, but will only continue if enough people take up the offer.

Pendle MP Gordon Prentice urged everyone in the 685 at-risk homes to take up the service.

An exhibition at Barrowford Library from January 15-22 will show the affected areas and inform residents and business owners of the steps they can take to reduce the risk.

A community meeting about the warning service will be at Nelson and Colne College at 7pm on January 31.
