PENDLE Council is warning people to beware of rogue taxi drivers out in force due to the huge increase in demand over the festive period.

Coun Marjorie Adams, Pendle Council's taxi licensing committee chairwoman, said: "Before you get into the car make sure the driver is licensed. Licensed drivers must wear a badge with their photograph and licence number, regardless of whether they are hackney carriages or private hire.

"Never risk your life by getting into an unlicensed taxi. Unlicensed taxis won't have had safety checks and may not even be insured.

"The council checks drivers' criminal records before issuing a licence. If the driver is not licensed, they may have a conviction which makes them unsuitable to drive."

She said people should be aware of the difference between hackney carriages and private hire and fares that apply over the New Year period.

Hackney carriages, which are red cars or black London-style cabs, can be flagged in the street or hired from the rank and are only entitled to charge what is set on the meter, which will increase fifty per cent.

They have their licence number displayed on front passenger doors in white and they have a green plate on the front and rear bumper.

Private hire vehicles are any colour car and must be pre-booked by telephone and the fare, which is set by agreement with the driver, should be agreed before you set off.

The taxi firm name and phone number must be displayed on the front passenger doors and a blue plate must be visible on the back.
