AROUND £1.4million will be spent in the New Year as rail bosses update a level crossing in Burnley.

Network Rail is investing the cash to renew the level crossing in Hufling Lane. Preliminary work has already begun on the crossing but the main part of the work will be carried out in January.

The crossing is on the main Blackpool to York and Leeds line with a stop at Manchester Road station in the town.

Gary Openshaw, Area General Manager said: "Investment of this kind is key to providing a reliable rail service for passengers, and this scheme will also have long-term benefits for crossing users."

During the work the barriers will be replaced and the signalling equipment will be renewed. The scheme is being carried out because the level crossing equipment is at least 25 years old and is reaching the end of its working life. This work will ensure the crossing is more reliable.

The scheme will require a short road closure while some of the more complex work is carried out.

This closure will start on Sunday, January 21, and will be in place for a week. A diversionary route will be in place but exact details have yet to be be agreed with the local authority.

Train services will continue to run as normal during this work and the level crossing will remain open to pedestrians where possible.
