LANCASTRIANS all over the county can celebrate their heritage in an annual historical anniversary.

Lancashire Day is today being celebrated to mark the day when the first elected representatives were summoned to Westminster in 1295 for Parliament by King Edward I.

Various events are taking place across the region to mark the occasion.

Friends of Real Lancashire have been protecting, preserving and promoting the county's identity for over 20 years.

Chris Dawson, chairman of Friends of Real Lancashire, said: "On Lancashire Day, Lancastrians wherever they are can celebrate the fact that no legislation has ever changed the boundaries of the traditional county of Lancashire. Lancashire is Lancashire.

"Despite changes to the administrative area within the county over the years, the real traditional and geographical county of Lancashire is the same as it has always been, since the county was first created in the Twelfth Century."
