POLICE have launched a major investigation after a teenager was stabbed outside a Nelson church.

Detectives said the 19-year-old Asian male was stabbed outside Nelson Methodist Church, Hibson Road, around 11pm on Saturday.

Police and paramedics found the teenager suffering from knife wounds to his head and chest.

The teenager, who has not been named, was taken by ambulance to Burnley General Hospital and underwent surgery for his injuries yesterday.

Detective Supt Mick Gradwell is leading the investigation.

He said: "Although we have three men in custody, it is important that anyone with has information about the incident or anyone who may have witnessed it comes forward so we can piece together exactly what has happened."

The scene of the incident was sealed off over the weekend while police teams carried out a search of the site and forensic examinations.
