METAL detector wands were used by pub door staff for the first time in Accrington last night in a bid to cut down on knife crime.
Four pubs in the town centre were given pairs of the airport secturity-type detector wands to scan customers as they entered the premises.
The wands, costing £100 each, are part of Accrington Police's violent crime action plan and are being used as a preventative measure.'
Sgt Ian Corbett said: "The idea is to reduce violent crime and show that Accrington and Hyndburn on the whole is a safe place to visit in the evening.
"If this prevents just one incident then it will be a success."
The detectors were used at The Bridge, Baileys, Bees Knees and Industry nightclub.
